In south-eastern Morocco, on the edge of the Sahara, the small village of Merzouga sits at the foot of Erg Chebbi, a sea of golden dunes stretching for around twenty kilometres, with the highest reaching ≈ 150 metres. Sunrise over the sand, a camel ride and a night in a desert camp under a sky full of stars: for many travellers it is the highlight of their trip to Morocco. Merzouga lies ≈ 550 to 600 km from Casablanca, so rather than driving it in one go, we recommend a multi-day tour with a private driver to enjoy the scenery along the way.

Things to see and do in Merzouga

The signature experience is a night in a camp in Erg Chebbi. You reach the camp by camel or 4x4 in the late afternoon, watch the sunset from a dune crest, have dinner under the stars, then rise early to see the sun come up over the sand. Camps range from simple bivouacs to luxury tents with private bathrooms.

Around Merzouga, visit Khamlia, a village known for its Gnawa music, and the market town of Rissani, once a caravan hub of the Tafilalet region. Erfoud is famous for its fossil workshops. On the way, the Ziz Valley and its palm groves provide breathtaking views.

Getting from Casablanca to Merzouga with a driver

The southern route: Casablanca to Marrakech (≈ 2 hours 45), then over the Tizi n’Tichka pass at around 2,260 m in the High Atlas, past the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, through the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge to Merzouga. It is the most scenic option, ideally spread over 3 to 4 days.

The northern route: Casablanca to Fez (≈ 3 hours 15), then Ifrane, the Azrou cedar forest with its Barbary macaques, Midelt and the Ziz Valley down to Merzouga. From Fez, allow ≈ 7 to 8 hours of driving. Many travellers combine both as a loop: out via Fez, back via Ouarzazate and Marrakech. Roads to Merzouga are fully paved; the camps handle access into the dunes by camel or 4x4.

When to go and travel tips

The best time is October to April. Summer is extremely hot in the desert, while winter days are pleasant but nights can be cold, so pack a fleece and a hat. Spring can bring the occasional sandstorm.

Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a scarf against the sand and a head torch. A small overnight bag is easier for the camp than a large suitcase, which can stay in the vehicle. For long days on the road, the Mercedes V-Class and Skoda Kodiaq offer comfort and plenty of space.

Suggested itinerary: a 4-day tour

Day 1: Casablanca to Marrakech. Day 2: Marrakech, the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and on to the Dades Valley. Day 3: the Todra Gorge, then Merzouga by mid-afternoon for a sunset camel ride and a night in the desert. Day 4: sunrise over the dunes, then back north via Midelt and Ifrane to Fez for the night before returning to Casablanca.
