Tucked into the foothills of the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen is one of Morocco’s most photogenic towns. Founded in 1471, it is famous for its medina painted in every shade of blue, its laid-back atmosphere and the nature all around it. At ≈ 350 km from Casablanca, or about 4.5 to 5 hours by road, Chefchaouen fits perfectly into a private driver tour alongside Tangier, Tetouan or Fez.

Top things to see in Chefchaouen

The heart of town is Outa el-Hammam square, lined with cafés and overlooked by the Grand Mosque with its octagonal minaret. Right next to it, the ochre-walled Kasbah hides an Andalusian garden and a small ethnographic museum; climb the ramparts for a view over the rooftops. The rest of the fun is simply getting lost in the blue lanes, with their stairways, carved doors and flowerpots.

Below the medina, the Ras el-Ma spring is a lovely spot where locals come to cool off. Across the stream, a path climbs in around thirty minutes to the Spanish Mosque on the hillside, the best viewpoint over town at sunset. For souvenirs, look for woollen weavings, and try the local goat’s cheese the region is known for.

Getting from Casablanca to Chefchaouen by private driver

The drive from Casablanca to Chefchaouen covers ≈ 330 to 370 km depending on the route, or about 4.5 to 5 hours: motorway to the north of the country, then mountain roads through the Rif for the final stretch. That is exactly where an experienced private driver makes the difference: you enjoy the scenery while he handles the bends.

Many travellers include Chefchaouen in a multi-day tour such as Casablanca, Tangier, Chefchaouen and Fez, or the same loop in reverse. Fez is about 200 km away, and Tetouan a little over an hour. In a Mercedes V-Class or a Skoda Kodiaq, the ride stays comfortable even on winding roads.

When to go and travel tips

Spring is the ideal season, with green mountains and mild temperatures, and autumn is also very pleasant. Summer brings big crowds, while winter can be cool and rainy, with cold nights in the hills.

We recommend spending at least one night: early in the morning and in the evening, once the day-trippers have left, the lanes become wonderfully quiet. Always ask before photographing local residents.

Suggested itinerary: 2 days in the Rif

Day 1: leave Casablanca in the morning, arrive in Chefchaouen by early afternoon, wander the medina and watch the sunset from the Spanish Mosque. Day 2: a trip with your driver to Akchour, about 30 km away, to hike to the waterfalls and God’s Bridge, a natural rock arch in Talassemtane National Park. The next day, continue to Fez or Tangier, or head back to Casablanca.
